The Mumbai–Pune corridor is one of India's busiest intercity routes. Business travellers, weekenders, students and families move between the two cities every day. The train is popular, but a cab gives you door-to-door comfort on your own schedule.
Distance and route options
Mumbai to Pune is approximately 150 km by road. There are two main routes:
- Mumbai–Pune Expressway: the fastest option, about 2.5–3.5 hours in normal traffic. The 94 km toll expressway crosses the Western Ghats and is the route most drivers prefer.
- Old Mumbai–Pune Highway (via Khopoli): slightly longer and slower but avoids the expressway toll, winding through the ghats via Khopoli and Khandala.
How long does the journey take?
On a clear weekday morning, starting before 8 am, you can reach Pune in under 3 hours. Friday evenings and Sunday nights are different: traffic near Khopoli and at the entry to Pune can stretch the journey to 4–5 hours.
Early mornings and mid-afternoon (2–4 pm) are usually the least congested times to leave.
